About

Modern Type is a global typeface foundry with a mission to change the industry's approach to typography. Our aim is to build stronger foundational knowledge of non-euro centric perspectives that are rooted in cultural context and multi-script outcomes.

The world is now vastly interconnected globally, our first form of communication should be too.

With an expansive network of local, international and native speakers, researchers and designers, we utilise their experience, knowledge and expertise to quickly get up to speed on required contextual design standards allowing the proper voices to filter through in our work.

We don't take any single perspective, rather we dig deep and build each typeface through listening and understanding native ideas and the different perspectives ensuring each outcome is reflective of heritage, culture and voice.

  • Digital license

This license covers anywhere the font is being used in a digital environment. Examples of physical environments are as follows: websites, online advertising, social media, online documents, etc.

  • Non-commercial License

This license is for designers, not-for-profit companies and students. It covers situations where the font is not being used for commercial purposes. Primarily this is for designers and agencies to use for client presentations, concept proposals, testing or internal projects that do not generate revenue. Not-for-profits and students can also use this licence for their general font needs.

Additional Licences

Beyond our core licenses above, we offer a range of licenses covering more unique use cases and if any of these do not reflect your needs, please get in touch with us via mail@modern-type.com.

App/Hardware

An app/hardware/software license is a slight variation of our digital license. It enables the embedding of fonts into apps or hardware devices such as an operating system for users to use throughout the system. This license however does not give end users of the app/hardware/software to use the fonts for commercial purposes. Please reach out to us at mail@modern-type.com if You need this type of license.

Broadcasting

A broadcasting license is for those seeking to use Our fonts in either live footage such as streaming, sports, news programs and other live formats or for those seeking to incorporate it in a recorded video such as a YouTube video, music video, short film and feature films. Please reach out to us at mail@modern-type.com if You need this type of license.

Corporate

If You are seeking a license for an end user with over 1000 employees, desire alterations of a typeface or require more flexible terms, the end user will need a custom corporate license. Please reach out to us at mail@modern-type.com if You need this type of license.

FAQ

  • We support the idea of switching to a script first, language second, reporting method when detailing the breadth of our fonts. Contemporary type design is flourishing today with better technology standards, so too is access to broader audiences. However, this does not extend to script or language support. Far too few typefaces today support all Latin based languages, often falling short of bare minimums by a long way. We believe that if you can design the basic script, you should be able to support all of it. Our fonts support all Latin languages as standard with additional scripts being added when completed.

  • We thought long and hard about this one and ended up not providing this particular license to customers. The reason being is we didn't want to limit the character set in anyway, not strip away opentype features that could be the difference in persuading clients. We also run into issues with non-latin scripts where the required minimum for testing is the entire font... thus we felt having a non-commercial option available for designers and studios to be able to use the font freely, without constraint — to get designs, concepts and dev builds signed off near the point of delivery — was the best way forward. We've priced it at the cost of shouting the team a dinner and drinks at the pub.

  • Yes they are for the licensed user. You buy it once, it yours forever. If your company size changes, that's okay, we only charge for the size you are at the date of purchase. If you grow, fantastic, we're glad we are part of that journey.

  • The End User is the company that will use the typeface for commercial purposes. For example, a studio designs a brand for a client and requires a license of the typeface used. The End User in this scenario is the client and not the studio. However if a studio designs a book for a publisher, the studio is the end user as they hold the commercial rights to the design.
